Performing membership is open to musicians of any nationality aged between 13 and 26, who play one of the following instruments: violin, viola, cello, double bass, flute, oboe, clarinet, bassoon, French horn, trumpet, trombone, tuba, percussion, harp, piano. (Please note that all must be good sight-readers.) Prague residents and applicants aged between 16 and 21 will be given priority.

This is a project orchestra which means that membership can vary from production to production. Prague is well-known as one of the most musical cities in the world: indeed, the Czechs say of themselves, “Co Čech to musikant” – “If he’s Czech then he must be a musician.” There should be no shortage of musicians of the right calibre and an international youth orchestra in Prague should easily find its way to the hearts of anyone who is open to the charm of the European musical tradition. There is already a strong tradition of Mozart and Dvořák in Prague. We plan to build on this, cultivating in addition the symphonies of Haydn, Beethoven and Brahms and the piano concertos of Beethoven. But we are also anxious to open the doors to modern music and to crossover projects. This is the music that young musicians want to play and we aim to provide the right setting for them, so that they can realise their highest potential. In order to join the orchestra musicians must also become members of the foundation.

Accommodation and transport are usually the responsibility of the musicians and their families. The orchestra cannot be held responsible but will assist members as far as possible. Members who are able to play solo concertos with the orchestra should receive an opportunity. Student conductors and composers will also be encouraged as will projects for chamber music.

B

The audience is the most important constant factor in any musical performance. Anything which remains unintelligible to an entire audience has failed in its aim. On the other hand each audience consists of very different people, some musically trained, others artistically active, some intellectuals or businessmen, some may just be curious – perhaps venturing into new terrain for the first time – so that we are unlikely to see a complete consensus. However we do aim to keep an open dialogue with our audience, so that impressions, opinions and criticism can be readily exchanged. No nationality and no language will be excluded but most rehearsals and daily business will be conducted in English, German or Czech.

C

Joining the orchestra

Any musician who plays one of the instruments listed above and is aged between 13 and 26 is eligible to apply.
